Rolf Tarrach got his PhD from the University of Barcelona. He has been postdoctoral researcher at CERN, Geneva and has been professor of theoretical physics at the University of Barcelona. He has published some 100 papers in theoretical high-energy physics, quantum field theory, quantum mechanics and quantum information theory and has written five books. He has supervised 12 PhD theses. He has given more than 150 talks and seminars on physics and more than 200 conferences on other subjects. He has been awarded a honoris causa from the University of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the University of Liège, Belgium, and is the recipient of some 15 prizes and decorations from Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg. He has been Vice-rector at the University of Barcelona. He is a former member of the European Union Research Advisory Board, of the European Heads of Research Councils group and of the 5-year assessment panel of experts of the European Commission. He is a former member of the Board of Telefonica of Catalonia. He has been co-organizer of the first three Euroscience Open Forum meetings in Stockholm, Munich and Barcelona. He has been chair of the International Experts Board of Estrategia Universidad 2015 (Spain) and member of the International Jury of Initiatives d’excellence (ANR, France). He is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. He advises a large company in Barcelona on innovation and is member of a few think tanks and a few advisory boards. He has participated in the evaluation of universities and research systems in Spain, Kuwait, Austria, Germany, France and Finland.
Dr Rolf Tarrach was born in 1948 in Valencia. He studied Physics at the University of Valencia and obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Barcelona. He has published more than one hundred papers in theoretical high energy physics, quantum field theory, and quantum mechanics and has written two books on quantum information theory. He served as a postdoctoral researcher at CERN in Geneva, and he has made different research placements at prestigious research centres like the Center of Theoretical Physics in Marseille. Honoured with a degree honoris causa from the University of Saint Petersburg, Tarrach was vice-rector of the UB (1990-1994), dean of the Faculty of Physics of the UB (1996-1998), and president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (2000-2003). He has been the rector of the University of Luxembourg since 2005. He has received the Cañada Blanch prize, the Eduard Fontserè prize, the Narcís Monturiol prize, the Pi i Sunyer prize, and the Commendation and the Numbered Commendation of the Order of Isabel la Católica. .

Biography
Prof. Dr. Rolf Tarrach is the rector of the new trilingual University of Luxembourg as of January 2005. Dr. Rolf Tarrach was born in 1948 in Valencia, Spain. He studied Physics at the University of Valencia, Spain and obtained his PhD from the University of Barcelona. He served as a postdoctoral researcher at CERN, Geneva, and is now a professor of theoretical physics at the universities of Valencia and Barcelona.
He has published more than 100 papers in theoretical high energy physics, quantum field theory, and quantum mechanics and has written two books on quantum information theory. He has been honored with a honoris causa degree from the University of Saint Peterburg Russia, and he is the recipient of eight official prizes. He was Dean of the School of Physics and Vice-Rector of the University of Barcelona. Dr. Tarrach is the former president of CSIC Madrid (the Spanish Scientific Research Council) and a former member of the European Union Research Advisory Board, of the European Heads of Research Council group (which he also chaired) and of the 5-year assessment panel of experts of the European Commission.
Dr. Tarrach is a former member of the Board of Telefonica of Catalonia and has been a co-organizer of the first three Euroscience Open Forum meetings in Stockholm (2004), Munich (2006) and Barcelona (2008).
