John Tahourdin White (–) was an English classical scholar.

Life

He was the second son of John White of Selborne in Hampshire. He matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, on 28 January , was elected an exhibitioner in the same year, and graduated B.A. in , M.A. in , and B.D. and D.D. in He was ordained deacon in as curate at Swynnerton in Staffordshire.

White was appointed reader at St. Stephen Walbrook in , and acted as assistant master at Christ's Hospital from to In he became curate at St. Ann, Blackfriars, was ordained priest in , and in was appointed curate at St. Martin Ludgate, serving until , when he was instituted rector.

White died at 17 Cambridge Road, Brighton, on 17 December

Works

White published editions of Greek and Latin authors, including the Grammar School Texts. With Joseph Esmond Riddle he brought out in A Latin-English Dictionary, London, based on Ethan Allen Andrews's translation of Wilhelm Freund's Wörterbuch der lateinischen Sprache. Freund's Wörterbuch was published at Leipzig between and , and Andrews's translation at New York in White and Riddle's Dictionary was later largely superseded by that of Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short (). A College Latin-English Dictionary of intermediate size appeared in , and a Junior Student's Complete Latin-English and English-Latin Dictionary in

White also edited Robert Lynam's History of the Roman Emperors (London, , 2 vols.).

John Trevor Whitewas born in the village of Draycott in Somerset, England in While he was still a baby, his parents dedicated him to missions in China. However, White was destined to bring the gospel to the indigenous people of Borneo. 

The Welsh revival left an indelible impact on White’s mother, Grace, who told him the stories of how people had been touched and the amazing power that they had experienced. White absorbed these stories and at the age of 17, he gave his life to God. The young man, who was already serving in Sunday School, was further inspired when a Baptist pastor in Cheddar invited him to preach in different village churches. He also served an apprenticeship in carpentry and sign writing which proved to be useful later when he would build churches in Borneo.

Fired up with a zeal for missions after the Keswick Convention, he wrote to several mission organisations but discovered that theological training was needed for missionary work. While White was in The Bible College of Wales (now known as Trinity School of Ministry), he kept asking, “Where is God calling me?” One day, as he was reading 1 Kings where God told Elijah “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan”, a voice seemed to tell him “Go to the east”.

But where in the East? White wrote to the head of the British and Foreign Bible Society seeking direction and two possibilities emerged: The Christian and Missionary Alliance in the United States or the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) based in Melbourne. As there was no BEM office in the United Kingdom, White went under Worldwide Evangelisation for Christ (WEC International). It took 10 months before he finally set sail for Borneo where he served for the next 50 years.

When John Thomas White was born on 29 March , in Crestline, Jackson Township, Crawford, Ohio, United States, his father, Joseph White, was 30 and his mother, Emma Coates, was He married Emma Alpha Overholtz on 14 January , in Allen, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter. He lived in Bath Township, Allen, Ohio, United States in and Lima, Allen, Ohio, United States for about 20 years. He died on 15 April , in Allen, Ohio, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in Lima, Allen, Ohio, United States.

John T. White, born in , was one of six children of a Middletown merchant, according to "Portrait and Biographical Record of the Sixth District," published in His father served for a time as the president of Frederick County's board of school commissioners.

After attending Middletown schools, White went to Mercersburg College. He graduated in , then tutored Latin and Greek for a year, before moving to Mauch Chunk, Pa., where he was principal of both the grammar and high schools.

White moved to Cumberland in He was a school administrator and superintendent for more than 20 years, according to the text of House Bill He served as president of the Maryland State Teachers' Association and was "noted as one of the most successful educators in the State during the end of the 19th century," the bill states.

In , White married Alice Eberly of Mercersburg, Pa. The Whites were members of St. Mark's Reformed Church and "popular in the best social circles of Cumberland," according to "Portrait and Biographical Record."

White was more than an educator, the book states: "As a poet, he is known throughout the state."

He wrote a verse titled "The Birth of Christ," which he had published as a gift book, as well as a poem on "Gettysburg."

He gave a lecture around the state, "Immortelles in Poetry," and advocated the memorization of songs and poems in schools.

In a speech before the Southern Educational Association in , he encouraged his colleagues to "wander through the meadows of poetry inhaling the rich and precious perfume of her countless flowers whose divine essence will be forever breathed in the cloudless realm of eternity."

One visit by White to his birthplace was recorded in the July 21, , Valley Register, which stated White and his wife spent their summer vacation with his mother and sister in Middletown shortly after his father's death.
