John Njoroge Michuki

John Njoroge Michuki (* 1932) ni mfanyabiashara na mwanasiasa nchini Kenya.

Michuki ni mwenyeji wa wilaya ya Muranga alikozaliwa katika familia ya Wakikuyu. Alisoma A-levels huko Mangu High School pamoja na Mwai Kibaki halafu uchumi kwenye chuo kikuu cha Oxford (Uingereza).

Kati ya 1970 na 1979 alikuwa mwenyekiti wa Kenya Commercial Bank.

1983 alijiunga na siasa akiwa mbunge wa KANU kwa Kangema na kupewa vyeo mbalimbali serikalini.

Kwenye uchaguzi wa kwanza wa vyama vingi 1992 akajiunga na chama cha upinzani Ford-Asili akarudishwa bungeni tena mwaka 1997 kwenye tiketi ya Ford-People.

2002 alisimama upande wa NARC akaingia katika serikali ya kwanza ya rais Mwai Kibaki kama waziri wa usafiri na uchukuzi. Alikuwa maarufu kwa ukali jinsi alivyowalazimisha wenye matatu na madereva kutii utaratibu wa barabarani pamoja na kuweka mitambo ya kupakana mkasi wa mwendo wa gari na kanda za usalama.

2005 akawa waziri wa usalama wa ndani. Katika kipindi hiki alipata sifa mbaya kwa kuamuru uvamizi wa ofisi za gazeti la East African Standard pamoja na kituo cha televisheni cha KTN. Katika serikali ya Januari 2008 Michuki amekuwa waziri wa barabara na kazi za umma.

      Early life

      Michuki was born in December 1932 at Muguru village, Iyego Location, Kangema Division in modern-day Murang’a County. He was born to a large polygamous family of Chief Michuki wa Kagwi who had 47 wives. Michuki was the first-born son of Mariana Wanjiku, the 45th wife of Chief Michuki Kagwi.

      Despite his chiefly parentage, Michuki did not enjoy the privileges of life in his early upbringing. This was largely because his father died on 4 January 1940 when young Michuki was just seven years old. He suffered the fate of large polygamous families, where sons of older wives tend to disinherit those of younger wives. As such, Michuki's mother secured only 3 acres from the large Michuki estate.

      In many respects, Michuki's early life was similar to that of many post-colonial African elite who rose to prominence aided by a combination of the social capital and ties of extended family, networks of friends, sheer ingenuity and hard work.

      NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 22 – During his career as a civil servant and the period he served in the private sector, the late Environment Minister John Njoroge Michuki was known to be firm and never shied away from controversy.

      He was born in a large polygamous family at Muguru Village, Iyego location of Kangema location in 1932.

      The illustrious minister was described by colleagues in Parliament on Wednesday as a ‘no-nonsense’ individual.

      His father died in 1940 when Michuki was just seven years old.

      He started his early education at Muguru primary school in 1941 and dropped out two years later due to scarcity of fees forcing him to seek tailoring-related work in the capital Nairobi, where he got menial jobs at a uniform store fixing buttons. He would later return to Nyeri where he earned Sh1 daily for repairing buttons at small shop in the town at the peak of the Second World War.

      He completed his Kenya African Primary Education in 1945 and went on to join Nyeri High School in 1947 for his Secondary education before he qualified for admission at the Mang’u High School for advance ‘A’ level education.

      Michuki would later land a prestigious scholarship at the Worcester College (constituent college of Oxford) in the United Kingdom where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Economics, Finance and Public Administration, courtesy of the government of Kenya.

      He joined the civil service in 1957 when he worked as a clerk in the Provincial Administration and upon graduating from Worcester in 1961 he was appointed District Commissioner, Nyeri.

      The late Michuki later rose through the ranks to various other government departments including the Treasury where he served as Finance as Permanent Secretary.
