Mathis grew up in Eastman, Georgia. He said that his mother worked in kitchens until she moved to New York where she found work at B. Altman’s department store. His father died when Mathis was a young adult at Savannah State.

He said that times were rough back then. “I went to Peabody. Back then we played on outside courts. The only time we played on the inside was when we went to Fort Valley, Montezuma or Milledgeville.”

Mathis was a only child and grew to be sixfoot seven. When asked where he got his height from he replied “both my parents were tall. My mother was five-foot-ten and my father was about six-foot-three.”

Right before his senior year of high school, Mathis went to stay in New York. While there, he played in the Rucker League where he improved his skills on the court.

Mathis states that he received very few scholarship offers while in high school. After speaking Savannah State head basketball coach Ted Wright, he decided to come to Savannah.

While at Savannah State (1960-64), Mathis played with the famed Chicago Five. “I was the sixth man on the Chicago Five. I had the privilege to start a couple of games back then.”

As a freshman and sophomore, Mathis played on post but his final two years he was moved to the back-court. “I was considered one of the first big guards,” he said.

Before Mathis left Savannah State, he was a member of two championship squads and twice made the All-Southeastern Athletic Conference (SEAC) team.

“During my senior year, I was sixth in the NAIA in scoring.”

In a game against South Carolina Area Trade, in 1964, Mathis netted 46 points.
