Jonah Hex was a legendary bounty hunter on the American western frontier in the 19th Century. His reputation as the deadliest man alive followed him everywhere, and he killed hundreds of men up until his death. Hex was a gruff anti-hero with a deep personal code of honor that kept him on the side of good despite his violent tendencies.
Origins

Jonah was born to father Woodson Hex and mother Virginia Hex on November 1, 1838. Raised by his alcoholic father, Jonah was a regular victim of physical abuse as a child. His father eventually stopped supporting him and sold him into slavery with an Apache tribe at the age of 13 during 1851. They worked him constantly until one day, in 1853, when he saved their chieftain from a puma, and he was welcomed as a full-fledged member of the tribe. The chief took Jonah in as his own son, but his adopted brother Noh-Tante grew jealous. Noh-Tante shared Jonah's affections for a young girl named White Fawn, so in 1854 he betrayed his brother during their manhood rite at the age of 16 and left Jonah for dead with their enemies the Kiowa. He is rescued by Cavalry patrollers, who were hunting scalps of Native Americans to Fort Hastings for $ 25 each (a fortune at the time); they shoot him in the gut when he tries to stop their slaughter on two Kiowa kids. Left for dead a second time, he is nursed back to health by an old trapper in the woods. Returning to his tribe's camp, he finds them long since gone.

Plot
Jonah Hex is a Confederate soldier who refuses an order from his commanding officer Quentin Turnbull to burn down a hospital. Hex is forced to kill his best friend Jeb, Turnbull's son, who draws a pistol on Hex. Turnbull later tracks Hex down at home and takes revenge for Jeb's death by killing Hex's family and branding Hex's face. Hex is found near death and healed by the Crow people; the experience leaves him with the ability to speak to the dead. Turnbull fakes his death in a hotel fire and Hex, unable to seek revenge, becomes a bounty-hunter.
In 1876, a gang of men led by Turnbull hijack a train carrying components of an experimental weapon invented by Eli Whitney. President Ulysses S. Grant realizes that Turnbull is planning to rebuild the weapon and use it to attack the U.S. on the Fourth of July. Grant instructs Army Lieutenant Grass to find Hex and hire him to track down and stop Turnbull. Grass' men find Hex in a brothel with a prostitute named Lilah and inform him that Turnbull is still alive.
Hex travels to meet Grass at his encampment and uses his ability to interrogate a dead soldier. The soldier tells Hex to find former Confederate Colonel Slocum, who now runs an illegal fighting pavilion in South Carolina. Hex confronts Slocum, who refuses to American comic book character For the live action film based on the character, see Jonah Hex (film). After a few years of caring for Hex, Woodson Hex (Jonah's father) decided to cease caring for Hex. Woodson sold him to an Apache tribe for slavery. They worked him 24/7. That is until he saved the chief from a puma. Then the chief took him in as his own son, and cared for Hex like he did his own son, Noh-Tante. But Jonah and Noh-Tante had an ongoing rivalry for a girl in the same tribe named White Fawn. Eventually, at the age of 16, Noh-Tante betrayed Hex by leaving him for dead right in front of their enemies, the Kiowa tribe. Luckily, he is rescued by a Calvary patrol. Unluvkily, they shot him in his stomach because he attempted to stop the slaughter they had there. He was left for dead, again, but luckily, again, he was rescued by an old hunter and nursed back to health. When Jonah was back to good health, he went back to the base of his tribe, only to find that they were all long gone. Later on, he joined the confederate States army, but not because he wasn't against slavery, but because his homeland was being invaded. Jonah soon went to the general of the Union army to make stop attacking his homeland. But the plan backfired; they took him as a prisoner and put a burning tomahawk to his face until he gave up the locations of a base, but he never gave the locations. He didn't want to get one of his closest friends, Jeb Turnbull, killed. Sadly, they managed to trace the locations of the men by the mud on his shoes and the footprints. They then invaded Jonah's friends and comrades. Jonah eventually returned to his village after finding them in 1866, only to find that Noh-Tante had married White Fawn. He accused Noh-Tante of betraying him to the chieftain, but he doesn't believe him. So he puts Jonah and Noh-Tante to fight to the death.
