Demi Moore
American actress and producer (born 1962)
Demi Gene Moore (də-MEE; née Guynes; born November 11, 1962) is an American actress and producer. After rising to prominence in the early 1980s, Moore became the world's highest-paid actress by 1995. She is recognized as a pioneer for equal salary for women in Hollywood. Her accolades include a Golden Globe Award, in addition to nominations for an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award.
Moore began her career as a model and joined the cast of the soap opera General Hospital in 1981. After departing the show in 1983, she rose to prominence as a member of the Brat Pack, with roles in the films Blame It on Rio (1984), St. Elmo's Fire (1985), and About Last Night... (1986). She emerged a star with her portrayal of a grieving girlfriend in the romance film Ghost (1990), had further box office success in A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Disclosure (1994), and received a then-unprecedented $12.5 million to star in Striptease (1996). Her output decreased significantly after The Scarlet Letter (1995), The Juror (1996), and G.I. Jane (1997) fell below commercial expectations.
Moore has since held sporadic leading roles in arthouse films; supporting roles in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Bobby (2006), Mr. Brooks (2007), and Margin Call (2011); as well as television credits in If These Walls Could Talk (1996), Empire (2017–2018), and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024). She received renewed recognition for her performance as an aging celebrity in the body horror film The Substance (2024), winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Moore has been married three times. From 1981 to 1985, she was married to musician Freddy Moore Demi Moore was born 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Her father Charles Harmon left her mother Virginia Guynes (née King) before Demi was born. Her stepfather Danny Guynes didn't add much stability to her life either. He frequently changed jobs and made the family move a total of 40 times. The parents kept on drinking, arguing and beating, until Guynes finally committed suicide. Demi quit school at the age of 16 to work as a pin-up girl. At 18 she married rock musician Freddy Moore; the marriage lasted four years. At 19 she became a regular on the soap opera General Hospital (1963). From the first salaries she started partying and sniffing cocaine. That lasted more than 3 years, until director Joel Schumacher threatened to fire her from the set of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) when she turned up high. She got a withdrawal treatment and returned clean after a week, and stayed clean. With determination and a skill for publicity stunts, like the nude appearance on cover of Vanity Fair while pregnant, she made her way to fame. Since the huge commercial success of Ghost (1990) and the controversial pictures Indecent Proposal (1993) and Disclosure (1994) she's one of Hollywood's most sought-after and most expensive actresses. BornNovember 11, 1962 Demi Moore was at a “low point” when she received the script for her horror movie The Substance. It turned into one of the biggest honors of her career. Moore, 62, won her first major acting award on January 5, taking home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy. Taking the stage, she shared an emotional speech reflecting on her own struggles with self-worth— similar to Elisabeth Sparkle, her character in the 2024 film directed by Coralie Fargeat. She recalled when a producer once told her she was a “popcorn actress,” leading her to question her ability. “That corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I had done what I was supposed to do... and the universe told me that you’re not done,” Moore told the crowd. “Today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness, and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong.” Moore’s last Golden Globe nomination was in 1997 for If These Walls Could Talk, the anthology television film starring Cher and Sissy Spacek. She has never been nominated for an Academy Award, though Sunday’s win bodes well for that changing this year. Actor Demi Moore has starred in St. Elmo’s Fire, Ghost, Disclosure, and The Substance, for which she won a 2025 Golden Globe Award. As a teenager, Moore found her way onto the soap opera General Hospital before becoming part of the Brat Pack. She hit the jackpot in the 1990s with the hit movies Ghost and Disclosure, but her continued success was hampered by flops like Striptease and G.I. Jane amid projects such as Charlie’s Angels 2 and Margin Call. Moore is also known for her past marriages to fellow actors Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher. Her most recent roles inclu American actress Demi Moore made her film debut in 1981 and joined the cast of the daytime soap opera General Hospital that same year. After departing the show in 1983, she came to prominence as a member of the Brat Pack with roles in Blame It on Rio (1984), St. Elmo's Fire (1985), and About Last Night... (1986). Moore established herself as a bankable star with Ghost, the highest-grossing film of 1990. Her performance was praised and earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination. She had further box-office success in the early 1990s with A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Disclosure (1994). In 1996, Moore became the highest-paid actress in film history when she received an unprecedented $12.5 million to star in Striptease. She has since held sporadic leading roles in the arthouse films Passion of Mind (2000), Flawless (2008), and Blind (2017), as well as supporting roles in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Bobby (2006), Mr. Brooks (2007), Margin Call (2011) and Rough Night (2017). Moore's primetime television work includes the cable anthology If These Walls Could Talk (1996) and the streaming series Brave New World (2020).
