After a successful modelling career, Abraham made his acting debut with the erotic thriller film Jism (), a sleeper hit. He rose to prominence with the action film Dhoom () and the comedies Garam Masala (), Taxi No. (), and Dostana (). He also starred in the critically acclaimed dramas Water (), Kabul Express () and New York (), the last of which also turned out to be a commercial success. Despite several commercial failures in the subsequent decade, Abraham achieved success with the action thrillers Race 2 and Shootout at Wadala and drama Madras Cafe, and the ensemble comedies Housefull 2 () and Welcome Back ().
