The History of SASOL
Sahelian Solutions Foundation (SASOL) was founded in 1990 by consultants from Kenya and the Netherlands who possessed diverse expertise in water, construction, environmental science, and the social sciences. Each consultant had worked previously in Kitui, and saw the challenges that the community faced. The four had a shared understanding that an integrated approach, with water as an entry point, was key to addressing the agricultural problems facing the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) of Kitui County.
The Founders of SASOL are:
- Peter van Dongen
- G-C-M Mutiso
- Erik Nissen Petersen
- Jaap van der Zee
In the Beginning
SASOL struggled to find footing in the early 1990s. Diverse food security projects were attempted by SASOL to establish our organization:
- Schools as Entry Points to Enhance Food Security: 1991.
- Enhanced Food Security, Economic Development and Resource Improvement in Kitui District’s Lower Midland Zones: 1991.
- Kitui/Machakos Simsim [Sesame] Development Project: 1991.
- Schools as Entry Points to Enhance Ecology, Food Security, Health and Nutrition in Kenya’s ASALs- Pilot Project in Kwale District: 1992.
- Emergency Aid for Matinyani, Mutonguni, Mulango, and Changwithya Locations of Kitui District: 1992.
- Child Sponsorships in Mbusyani and Syomunyu: 1993.
Choices regarding this combination of development activity were informed not only by the expertise of the respective areas, but also by the need for relatively immediate and direct access to donor funds.
In 1994, SASOL made the decision to concentrate on the provision of water. By this time, SASOL had three years of experience developing water supply systems for schools. To satisfy these and other requirements, SASOL chose the option of sand dam technology. By this time, Utooni Self Help Group had already built 80 sand dams within the district and beyond. Other sand dams had been built by the colonial government, Eric Nissen Peterson in Mutomo, USAID, and the Catholic D US record label based in New York City For SalSoul the Puerto RicanSalsa radio station, see Cadena Salsoul. Record label Salsoul Records is an American New York City based record label, founded by three brothers, Joseph Cayre, Kenneth Cayre, and Stanley Cayre (the Cayre brothers). Salsoul issued about 300 singles, including many disco/post-disco 12-inch releases, and a string of albums in the 1970s and early 1980s. The label started in business in 1974, went defunct in 1985 and was relaunched in 1992. Artists such as Aurra,Skyy, Double Exposure, Love Committee(Gold Mind),Inner Life, Rafael Cameron, Moment of Truth, Jakky Boy & the Bad Bunch, Edwin Birdsong, Instant Funk, Loleatta Holloway, Civil Attack, First Choice, Joe Bataan, Vaughan Mason & Butch Dayo, Carol Williams, Jocelyn Brown, Ritchie Family, Salsoul Orchestra (led by Vincent Montana Jr) and Charo were at one time part of their roster. Bethlehem Music Company's catalogs, which included Salsoul Records, Bethlehem Records (a jazz label) and others, were licensed by Verse music group from 2010 for five years, before Verse's catalogs were bought out by BMG Rights Management in 2015. The Cayre family had been involved in many entrepreneurial ventures before they manufactured and distributed 8-track tapes, which included Bethlehem Records, in the early 1970s. They had purchased some catalogs of Mexican music to distribute, and infringed on the copyrights of CBS Records and RCA Records by selling them in the United States of America. They acquired a license for North American distribution for some of CBS's Latin catalog. This led to recording sessions that were distributed by CBS. When CBS was unable to increase profits, the rights reverted to the Cayres. The label's name was conceived by artist Joe Bataan, who recorded some of the earliest sessions for South African integrated energy and chemical company This article needs to be updated. The company was formed in 1950 in Sasolburg, South Africa, and built on processes that German chemists and engineers first developed in the early 1900s (see coal liquefaction). Today, Sasol develops and commercializes technologies, including synthetic fuel technologies, and produces different liquid fuels, chemicals, coal tar, and electricity. Sasol is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE: SOL) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: SSL). Major shareholders include the South African Government Employees Pension Fund, Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC), Allan Gray Investment Counsel,Coronation Fund Managers, Ninety One, and others. Sasol employs 30,100 people worldwide and has operations in 33 countries. It is the largest corporate taxpayer in South Africa and the seventh-largest coal mining company in the world. South Africa has large deposits of coal, which had low commercial value due to its high fly ash content. If this coal could be used to produce synthetic oil, petrol, and diesel fuel, it perhaps would have significant benefit to South Africa. In the 1920s, South African scientists started looking at the possibility of using coal as a source of liquid fuels. This work was pioneered by P. N. Lategan, working for the Transvaal Coal Owners Association. He completed his doctoral thesis from the Imperial College of Science in London on The Low-Temperature Carbonisation of South African Coal. In 1927, a white paper from the government was issued describing various o Salsoul Records
