Early Life and Education

Father Mbaka was born on July 28, , in Amata Ituku, Awgu L.G.A, Enugu State, to the late Chief Humphrey Ogbuefi Mbaka and Felicia Mbaka. He grew up in a village populated by palm wine tappers.

He had his primary and secondary school education in Enugu State, where he attended St. Vincent’s Secondary School, Agbogugu, in the Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State for his secondary education. Mbaka had his priestly training at Seat of Wisdom Seminary in Owerri, Imo State, and St. Joseph’s Seminary in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. He received his priesthood ordination on July 29, , in the Roman Catholic Church in the Order of Melchizedek.

Career

When he was a child, Fr. Mbaka organised block rosary prayers in their neighbourhood. He also gave praise to St. Anthony’s Parish in Ituku’s prayer warrior squad, which was revitalising Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Father Mbaka’s pagan father fiercely opposed his aspiration to become a Catholic priest. His father and kin resisted the idea of him becoming a priest. But on July 29, , at Holy Ghost Cathedral in Enugu, His Lordship Bishop Michael Ugwujah Eneja consecrated Fr. Mbaka as a Catholic priest. Following his ordination, Fr. Mbaka was assigned to Holy Ghost Cathedral in Enugu as the Assistant Diocesan Administration.

While serving as an assistant diocesan administrator, Fr. Mbaka went on evangelistic journeys beyond the cathedral. He frequently travelled to Capuchin and G.T.C. Enugu to hold masses for the faithful. The Eucharistic Jesus Word Prayer Centre was then established by him, and it later evolved into Adoration Ministries Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN). He has served as a parish priest in numerous parishes within the Enugu Diocese, including Christ the Kings Parish in GRA and Our Lady of Roses Parish in Emene. Weekly prayers are attended by thousands of followers at Adoration Ministries in Enugu, Nigeria (

All night at Fr. Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry: A real and moving presence in Nigeria

Every Friday night, for almost all of the night, huge crowds, mostly people aged about ,  gather in the outskirts of Enugu, Nigeria for a prayer event that is easily among the best attended weekly gatherings in the Catholic world, and certainly one of the most energetic ones.  The all-night worship at Fr. Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry radically reconfigures the relationship—and undermines the ordinary cultural distance—between post-tridentine devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and Pentecostal-style prayer.  One scholar describes it as the “Pentecostalization of Catholicism… [while] at the same time it is trying to Catholicize Pentecostalism.”1 Worship here combines preaching, ecstatic Eucharistic adoration, two Masses, anointing and dance in a way that is hard to imagine for anyone who has not seen it before. Fr. Camillus Ejike Mbaka, the spiritual director of the Adoration Ministry, is a celebrity and a force in the region, supported by many followers and clergy, though also controversial.

Starting at dinnertime on Friday evenings, devotees crowd the road to the stadium-sized grounds of the Adoration Ministry. Most walk there, and by 7 p.m. there are already thousands of devotees. They pray standing or on their knees, or dance, or simply wait on blankets and chairs they have carried with them for the start of Friday night adoration.2 For the next five hours, women and men, amplified by immense loudspeakers, take turns reciting what could be the highest volume Rosary ever, along with other prayers and religious songs. People approach the empty but brightly lit altar all evening, often holding up written petitions in prayer before leaving them in a big plastic basket in front of the altar. Asked whether or why it was important for them to write out the petitions, one participant noted that it was because Fr. Mbaka would pray over them, but then joked that it is so loud here

Father Mbaka is by birth, the only son from the family of late Chief Humphrey Ogbuefi and Felicia Mbaka in Amata Ituku in Awgu L.G.A of Enugu State. Ogbuefi Mbaka’s family is renowned for their special talent in palm wine tappingin the community (Ituku).

    Early Life

Right from infancy, the tiny Mbaka, though fully consumed by his domestic chores, still spared enough time to commune with God. He assisted his mother in the kitchen and other domestic duties, accompanied his father to their famous business of wine tapping and ensuring that all that was tapped was sold except the one reserved to entertain their daily visitors. Once through with the home demands, the little Mbaka would quickly run out to organize their Block Rosary Prayers where he usually assumed the role of Francisco (one of the three children visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima in Portugal in the year ) He was also deeply involved in the rejuvenation of Charismatic group in St. Anthony’s Parish Ituku where he led the prayer warrior team. His father though a pagan at that time cautiously tolerated his local runs in the Christian activities in the town, but as soon as “Cami” declared his desire to join the priesthood the story changed drastically. Pa Ogbuefi and his kinsmen not only opposed the idea but also persecuted their little boy and made life one miserable experience for him.
