ISSN: 1050-9208 print/1543-5326 online DOI: 10.1080/10509200590475814 The “Mechanical Truth” behind Cruel Intentions: Desire, AIDS, and the MTV Movie Awards’ “Best Kiss” CAETLIN BENSON-ALLOTT “See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?” —Cruel Intentions Just about four years ago, my television taught me that sometimes when two girls kiss, their image not only isn’t bad, it is “the Best.” In 1999, I watched as Katherine Merteuil led Cecile Caldwell down the primrosed path to first base in Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble), and in 2000, millions of viewers observed the actresses who played them, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, respectively, win the MTV Movie Awards’ “Best Kiss” and excite a storm of media titillation and girl-on-girl fascination. The decision to the mainstream medial outlets (like ABC news or the BBC) to cover Gellar and Blair’s ascendancy into teenagers’ sexual iconography indicates both the previously unheralded popularity of the MTV Movie Awards (see page eight for viewer statistics) and an increasing acceptance of same-sex embraces in straight cinema. Yet to understand how the Gellar-Blair kiss won, while yet remaining so titillating and controversial, one must take a closer look at the history and ideological goals of the MTV Movie Awards, the role that kiss plays in Cruel Intentions, and what sort of needs such a kiss might satisfy for “the MTV youth cult” (Quart 45). Gellar and Blair’s win was the first same-sex embrace to get “Best Kiss” (although since 2000, Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott of American Pie 2 have also won), but MTV has a history of nominating and even awarding unconventional kisses (such as the pre-pubescent embrace between Anna Chlumpsky and Macaulay Culkin in My Girl, which won the inaugural “Best Kiss” awar
