    Scope and Contents

The scope of this collection is vast, and reflects Hank Kaplan's devotion to collecting stories that would otherwise go untold, and his commitment to preserving obscure and ephemeral objects. The collection features 2,600 book titles, 500,000 rare prints and negatives, hundreds of linear feet of newspaper clippings from 1890-2007, more than 300 audiotapes and videotapes, over 1200 posters, approximately 200 boxes of publications, dozens of scrapbooks, reams of correspondence, and over 100 boxes of memorabilia items. Examples of memorabilia include autographed money, a heavy bag that Cassius Clay punched before renaming himself Muhammad Ali, a gold cigarette case that Max Baer gave his trainer Izzy Kline, and the scissors that Kaplan used to cut up countless newspaper clippings spanning the last century of boxing history.

The bulk of the collection is composed of newspaper clippings (both from local newspapers and boxing periodicals) that Kaplan himself would collect and cut, distributing them into the appropriate files. Kaplan rarely purchased items for his collection, instead amassing items primarily through donation and trade. In addition to memorabilia and clippings, there are also items that indicate a close relationship between Kaplan and his peers. For example, there are a large number of items that originally belonged to Kaplan’s friends Chris and Angelo Dundee, as well as Kid Gavilan.

The Hank Kaplan Archive is divided into twenty subgroups: Photographs; Artwork; Fighters by Surname; Posters; Bouts; Audio/Visual Material; Fighters by Weight Class; Boxing Personalities; Jewish Fighters; Scrapbooks; Memorabilia, Souvenirs, and Ephemera; Publications; Programs, Press Kits and Handbills; Locations; Fistic Arcana; Autographs; Hank Kaplan; Angelo Dundee; Muhammad Ali; and Organizations.

Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán (Latin American Spanish:[saˈulˈalβaɾes]; born 18 July 1990), commonly known as Canelo or Saúl Álvarez, is a Mexican professional boxer. He has held multiple world championships in four weight classes, from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes and lineal titles in two. In 2021, Álvarez became the first and only boxer in history to become the undisputed champion at super middleweight, holding this distinction until July 2024. He has also held the Ring magazine super middleweight title since 2020.

Álvarez began his professional boxing career at age 15 and, by 20, became the youngest boxer to claim the World Boxing Council (WBC) light middleweight title in 2011. In 2013, he beat Austin Trout to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) (Unified version) and Ring titles. In the same year, he lost his WBC and Ring light middleweight titles to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his first professional defeat. He defeated Miguel Cotto to win the WBC and Ringmiddleweight titles in 2016. That same year he returned to light middleweight to beat Liam Smith to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title. In 2017, he fought unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to a split draw. Their rematch in 2018 saw Álvarez beat Golovkin to become the WBA (Super version), WBC, and Ring middleweight champion. The following year, he beat Rocky Fielding for the WBA super middleweight title (Regular version) and won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight title from Daniel Jacobs in 2019. Later that year, Álvarez made his light heavyweight debut, knocking out former unified champion Sergey Kovalev to claim the WBO title.
