Actress Novella Nelson dead at 77
Broadway and film actress Novella Nelson played her role of Mrs. Tate to the hilt as the antagonist in the bio-dramatic film Antwone Fisher, Denzel Washington’s directorial debut. It’s a role she’s widely known for, not only for her amazing acting but also because she often addressed her adopted son in the movie as “n*gga.” But it is only one credit on her long résumé. Nelson earned over 100 television, film, Broadway and off-Broadway credits as a performer, director and producer, during a career that spanned nearly six decades. As a singer, she performed in cabaret-style venues.
Nelson had a lead role in Broadway’s Purlie (1970). In 1975, she directed the play La Femme Noire. .She started her film career at age 39, playing a role in An Unmarried Woman (1977).
Her Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include Having Our Say, The Little Foxes, Caesar and Cleopatra, Purlie, Hello Dolly (she was a stand-in for Pearl Bailey), Division Street, A Piece of My Heart, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Passing Games and In White America.
Film/TV credits include “Law and Order: SVU,” where she’s played four different characters; Dear Wendy, Antwone Fisher, Head of State, Clockers, The Cotton Club; Green Card;The Devil’s Advocate;The Starter Wife; One Life to Live; Sex and the City; and Oz, among others.
A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Nelson majored in biochemistry at Brooklyn College.
Brooklyn, New York-born, she passed away on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017. She was 77.
Novella Nelson
Sometimes after her family moved to Romulus, Novella met William Nis Nelson, Sr. who she later married March 12,1955. To this union nine children born. They later moved to Inkster, MI and purchased a home in Inkster where they resided with their children and until Novella went home to be with the Lord.
During this time she and her husband went on to attend and serve at Missionary Baptist Church with their children under the guidance Everend A.B. Searcy, of where she received the full baptism of the Holy Spirit. She sangin the choir, sreved as Missionary and an Usher. After 25 years of marriage, in December of 1979, her husband William Nis Nelson, Sr. preceded her in death. Her youngest sone son: LaJuan Alex Nelson and grandson, Keifor Johnson also preceded Novella in death.
She later went on to serve Amity Baptist Church under Reverend Johnson. After his death,later she joined New Birth Baptist Church in the covering of Reverend Dr. Joseph A. He served as the U.S. ambassador to Italy from 1913 to 1919 under the administration of President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. In his writing, Page popularized Plantation tradition literature which was used to promote the Lost Cause myth across the New South. Page first got the public's attention with his story "Marse Chan" which was published in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. Page's most notable works include The Burial of the Guns and In Ole Virginia. Page was born on one of the Nelson family's plantations, Oakland, near the village of Beaverdam in Hanover County, Virginia. He was the son to John Page, a lawyer and a plantation owner, and Elizabeth Burwell (Nelson). He was a scion of the prominent Nelson and Page families, each First Families of Virginia. Although he was from once-wealthy lineage, after the American Civil War, which began when he was only 8 years old, his parents and their relatives were largely impoverished during Reconstruction and his teenage years. In 1869, he entered Washington College, known now as Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia when Robert E. Lee was president of the college.
