MESSAGE BY MR VUYO D.KAHLA, CHAIRMAN OF THE COUNCIL OF RHODES UNIVERSITY ON THE APPOINTMENT OF DR SIZWE MABIZELA AS THE 6TH PRINCIPAL AND VICE CHANCELLOR OF RHODES UNIVERSITY

I have great pleasure in announcing that on 8 October 2014, the Council of Rhodes University unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Sizwe Mabizela as the 6 Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University with effect from 1 November 2014. This appointment is for a period of seven years and may be extended for a further term determined by the Council of the University at its discretion.

Following the resignation of Dr. Saleem Badat as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University to pursue a career with the Mellon Foundation in the United States of America; the Council, after consultation with the University's Senate and the Institutional Forum, determined a process to select the next Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University. This process was driven by a Selection Committee chaired by the Chairman of Council and consisting of nominees of all the major stakeholders of the University, including Council, Senate, academic and non-academic staff, and students. The objective of the Selection Committee was to conduct a credible selection process benefitting the stature and global standing of Rhodes University.

Through public advertisements, invitations were extended to, and received from, persons who considered themselves to meet the requirements and profile determined for appointment to this position. The Selection Committee, following an extensive interview, preceded by a presentation by Dr Mabizela, unanimously recommended his candidature to the University's Senate, in accordance with the agreed process for this selection. Senate, overwhelmingly, recommended Dr. Mabizela's appointment to Council.

Dr. Mabizela is eminently worthy of his appointment as the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of this prestigious University.

Rhodes University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, was awarded the Dean’s Award on Friday, 1 July 2016, during the Choral Evensong at the Anglican Cathedral of St Michael and St George. This award was established earlier this year to acknowledge any individual who has made a significant contribution to the life of the Grahamstown Community. Dr Mabizela is the recipient for 2016, and the first ever to receive the award as the Dean honoured the Vice-Chancellor for his values-based and ethical leadership.

“The Award is being given at a challenging time for the University in the light of the recent protests on campus against rape and rape culture. Led by Mabizela, the University has been very clear in its rejection of all forms of sexual assault and harassment, and is doing all it can to have policies and support systems in place to deal with such incidents, and to engage with the broader culture. At the same time, the Vice-Chancellor and the University Leadership has had to ensure that everyone’s rights, and safety, are protected. We support the efforts that are being made to do so. The Dean’s Award is one way to acknowledge this, to publicly affirm the Vice-Chancellor and to thank him for his personal example and his values-based, ethical leadership,” shared The Very Reverend Andrew Hunter, Dean of Grahamstown.

Having received the award, Dr Mabizela addressed the congregation.

“In April this year, our students very courageously brought to the national consciousness the pervasive and pernicious scourge of sexual violence in our society. I commend our students for the leadership they demonstrated. During the period of the student protests, a number of students came to my office to share with me their experiences. Their stories were so painfully and frighteningly similar. They would typically start by saying “my stepfather raped me when I was seven years old; my cousin raped m

As classes start this week at Rhodes University, Michael Willemse is hoping to begin his BA degree with anthropology and politics as his majors.

The 67-year-old is Pietermaritzburg-born, and Cape Town-bred. He matriculated at Bellville High School in 1970. Willemse had dreamed of studying architecture. However, because of personal constraints, he instead entered the workforce and spent most of his life in the aviation industry.

Willemse’s friend inspired him to study further. A contemporary of his began studying last year at Rhodes University.

“After having a conversation with my friend, I asked myself: ‘Why can’t I study?’” Willemse said.

“I am not dead yet and I cannot look for a job at my age. I feel that we learn every day and we have to impart that knowledge to the younger generation.”

Vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said in a statement he welcomed Willemse to Rhodes University.

“He brings vast experience with him and I am sure young people will benefit immensely from the depth of his knowledge and understanding of things that have happened before. We are absolutely delighted to have him as a senior student among the first years and we wish him everything of the best,” Mabizela said in a statement.

Willemse is a Sassa (South African Social Security Agency) recipient who is awaiting for his approval for NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) funding.
