    May 21,
Well. I actually liked this book quite a bit. I should point out right away that you won't learn anything about Basquiat's work reading it, but I didn't truthfully expect to. That's not why I picked it up. The book is strictly about the artist's life and times, both of which were a hot mess. From everything recounted here, the eighties art market in New York sounds completely deranged (not that it's much different now, I suspect).
The portrait of Basquiat that emerges is not pretty, but judging from the number of sources, it's probably pretty accurate: impossibly childlike, uncontrollable, completely incapable of coping with the tasks of day-to-day life or of reining in his appetite for drugs, women, and alcohol. From the start of his career, he was a "functioning addict." By the end he was just an addict. The later parts of the book read like every episode of VH1's Behind the Music ever: "Unfortunately, the drugs, booze and out-of-control womanizing had begun to get in the way of the music" or in this case, the art. This is a painter who lived (and died) like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin.
For me, the most interesting parts of the Basquiat story are sociological. The book is full of tales of art dealers showing up at Basquiat's studio with duffel bags full of untraceable cash which they traded for paintings which were barely finished. They must have known, given how much coke and heroin Basquiat would leave lying around, where that cash was going. They just didn't care because they also knew how much money they stood to make off of the paintings. While he was still hot, of course.
As damning as the portrayal of art dealers is (and it's damning, especially when Hoban comes to Vrej Baghoomian, a bottom-feeder who swooped in to exploit what was left of the artist when Basquiat already had one foot in the grave), Basquiat himself doesn't exactly come out clean. He was ruthlessly exploited by a deeply cynical (a

“This publication comprises three volumes and offers an impressive overview of the oeuvre of Basquiat, in conjunction with important texts. It is the major reference book, as most of Basquiat’s paintings are listed and sorted by year. Thus, the artistic development can be traced in an impressive way through his paintings. An absolute must for anyone interested in Basquiat’s works.”

Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art is a book by journalist Phoebe Hoban, chronicling the life of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Released in by Viking, the unauthorized biography was not endorsed by Basquiat's estate, but various people who were close to Basquiat contributed their recollections of him.

    Synopsis

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York to a multicultural middle-class family on December 22, Under the alias SAMO, he painted poetic verses on the walls of lower Manhattan in the late s. Within five years, Basquiat went from a teenage graffiti artist to an international art star renowned for his neo-expressionism paintings. Basquiat's brief career spanned the s art boom and epitomized its outrageous excess. Already considered a legend in his own lifetime, Basquiat was a fixture of the downtown scene. Along the way, he got involved with many of the most celebrated personalities, from his friendships with pop artistsKeith Haring and Andy Warhol to his romance with singer Madonna. Regarded as the "Jimi Hendrix of the art," Basquiat died of a drug overdose at age twenty-seven on August 12,

    Critical response

Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art received mixed reviews.

Publishers Weekly wrote: "Hoban makes a strong case that racism marred the life of the dreadlocked artist in paint-spattered Armani suits. What's missing is any analysis of the degree to which Basquiat's enormous drug consumption (ca. bags of heroin a day at the end) contributed to his imagery."

Patricia Bosworth wrote for The New York Times that "the book remains compulsively readable. There is enormous value in it, especially in Hoban's depiction of the glitzy 's art world."
