Patrick John Morrison (born July 15, 1939), known professionally as Patrick Wayne, is an American actor. He is best known as the second son of the actor John Wayne.
Early life
Patrick John Morrison was born in Los Angeles, California on July 15, 1939, as the second child to John Wayne (1907–1979), an actor, and his first wife, Josephine Alicia (née Saenz; 1908–2003), the daughter of Panama's Consul General to the United States. He had three siblings; Michael Wayne (1934–2003), Mary Antonia "Toni" Wayne LaCava (1936–2000), and Melinda Ann Wayne Munoz (1940–2022), and three half-siblings; Aissa Maria Wayne (born 1956),John Ethan Wayne (born 1962), and Marisa Carmela Wayne (born 1966), from his father's marriage to his stepmother, Pilar Pallete (born 1928), a Peruvian former actress. His godfather was John Ford, a film director.
Wayne attended Loyola Marymount University, where he was a member of the Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity. He graduated in 1961. From 1961 to 1965, he served a tour of duty with the United States Coast Guard.
Career
Wayne made his debut at the age of 11, as an uncredited extra in the romanticWestern film Rio Grande (1950). He went on to appear in 10 more films with his father, John Wayne; The Quiet Man (1952), The High and the Mighty (1954) - as a props assistant, The Conqueror (1956), The Searchers (1956), The Alamo (1960), The Comancheros (1961), Donovan's Reef (1963), McLintock! (1963), The Green Berets (1968), and Big Jake (1971). He appeared in several films directed by John Ford: The Sun Shines Bright (1952), The Long Gray Line (1955), Mister Roberts (1955), and The Searchers (1956). Outside of acting, Swayze co-wrote and recorded the song "She's Like the Wind" for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack album, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. He was also recognized for his public image and looks, and was named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine in 1991. In 2009, Swayze died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 57. I did an action adventure film for Disney called The Bears and I. You’re working with animals who don’t read scripts or memorize dialogue. Everything is pretty much ad-libbed, and you go with the flow and deal with the animals. That project came out really well. Also, the Sinbad film [Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger] I worked on with characters that weren’t present, doing a lot of choreography and pantomime, worked out well. Your grandparents were from Spain, and you recently went to Spain to receive a film award. Do you feel an innate connection with the country? I have been traveling to Spain since the late ‘60s [for] film, and each time I went I felt at home, very comfortable. I can only explain that by the fact that it was in my genes. I’ve been all over the world, and I have not had that same feeling in other parts of the world. Does on-camera work feel like play time for you? Completely play time. Child’s play. I’ve been doing it since I was nine years old. You learn so much when you don’t even know you’re learning. You experience so many things without putting it to pencil and paper, or doing exercises or drills. You have to develop skills for being able to get into character and you have to learn things, special skills such as sword fighting or horseback riding or working on a welding machine.
